Questions????

If you have a question you would like the Kings to answer about Africa, email KingsinAfrica@hotmail.com

We'll post your question here and answer it!

Emma asked the following questions:

1. Where do you work? What part of Africa do you live in?

We live in a country called the Ivory Coast, (or “la Côte d’Ivoire”, as it is said in French). It is in West Africa. The main language spoken is French.  Liberia is on the West and Ghana is on the East. Our town is called San Pédro.  It is on the Atlantic Ocean.

2. What is your job?

We are missionaries. We love serving Jesus.  It is a joy to witness to neighbors and others we meet on the streets and markets and see people accept Jesus as their Savior.  Then it is important to teach them God’s Word to make them strong. We began a church in San-Pédro and they now have their own African pastor.  We now are beginning another church in town.

In order to help the African people, we began a Bible Institute which is called “ITB”, or Institut Théologique Baptiste (Baptist Theological Institute).  Here men and women are trained to become pastors, missionaries, Bible teachers, evangelists, and local church workers. So just like you go to school, these adults are going to school to study God’s Word.

Some of the graduates from this school are now pastoring churches.  We are now working with one man, Bertin, who has started a church in Divo, which is about 4 hours from San-Pedro. Another man, Emmanuel is working with Steve teaching in the Bible Institute in San-Pedro.

Sometimes Steve travels to teach other national pastors.   One place is Blolequin (north-west of the country near Guiglo) to hold seminars for national pastors.  Can you find it on the map?

Gayle leads Bible studies with ladies and teaches Children’s Church each Sunday.  She also is the secretary for the Bible Institute.  We both work with the youth from our church.  Once a month we get together with the youth from various churches in the area to sing, watch Christian movies, and do other events.

A very recent project was to open a new business center called ITB Cyber Café.  This is next to the Bible Institute and provides Internet access, copying, international phone calls, and a Christian library.  Our ultimate goal is to take care of all of the expenses of the Bible Institute.

3. What is it like being a missionary?

It is a wonderful opportunity to serve Jesus and see God work in the lives of the African people.  We love the people here in Africa.  People call Steve “Papa” and Gayle “Maman”, since they see us like their parents in the Lord.

4. How long have you been there?

We first came to the Ivory Coast in 1991 and started working with English-speaking Liberian refugees. In 1997 we began ministering with the Ivorians, who speak French.

5. What is it like living in Africa?

We have met some amazing African people and it’s exciting to see what God has done so far.  We have had to adjust to some things. The average temperature is from 90 -100 degrees.  Think of a very hot summer day in August.  We do not have 4 seasons like you do in the States.  There are about 6 months of rainy season and 6 months of dry season.  Some hard things are that we have to filter our water, the power can go out at any time, and some of the roads have very large potholes, especially during rainy season. However, there are lots of great fresh fruits and vegetables here.  You can see rubber tree plantations, banana trees, and cocoa trees along the roads.  One of our favorite things here is that people are eager to receive tracts and other materials that have Bible verses in them.
